The Right to Vote

I’m watching the PBS - Ken Burns production “Not for Ourselves Alone”.  It’s about Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony.

I CANNOT BELIEVE that women couldn’t VOTE, DID NOT have the RIGHT to VOTE until 1920!.  The fact that women were not deemed WORTHY of the “right” to vote is simply INCONCEIVABLE to me!  How could people - of either sex ever believe this?! I suppose that I “should” be happy that I cannot understand this view of the world - but I am more appalled that anyone ever COULD accept or understand this view!

The fact that women were considered to be less HUMAN than men?! OH MY GOD! I have always known that people used to think this but at this point in my life I cannot understand how this existed here in the US.

In 1848 NO woman in the WORLD had the right to vote  - this is simply beyond my comprehension - then I am terrified that about 1/2 of the world’s population still believes this!!

I think this is something I will be thinking about and reading about for a while…

Newton vs. Hooke

In my recent reading, I’ve run across some information that dear old Isaac Newton might have ripped off THE ”First Law” from Robert Hooke.

I’m not quite sure what to do with information such as this.  It’s sort of like finding out that Thomas Jefferson plagiarised the Declaration of Independence from some French peasant in 1772!!!

Weather.com

I just thought I’d check out the weather for the next couple of days on good ‘ole weather.com and in the box where you plug in where you want the weather I had the following options to choose from:

Provincetown, Ma

Chicago, IL

Kansas City, MO

London, UK

York, UK

Edinburgh, UK

Dublin, IR

The site stores your recent searches … thus, I had a shocking reminder that I have had a grand 6 weeks!  Sheesh!  I would have never dreamed my life would  contain a summer like this - it SERIOUSLY just turned out this way.  Every once in a while it sort of freaks me out a bit.

I SO love to travel.

The equals sign was “invented” by Robert Recorde.  It appeared in his 1557 book Whetstone of Witte.  He choose that symbol “bicause noe  thynges can be moare equalle than two parallel lines of the same length”.

I thought that was interesting … if you are a nerd like me.

Lyrics

I absolutely don’t hear the lyrics to songs. It’s as if they just don’t exist!  The “words” are just other sounds to me.  When I try to listen to the words and understand what is being said I start to not hear the music … or at least I don’t hear it in the same way that I did; it just becomes flat and colorless. It’s sort of like going from a color image to black and white.  Some of my friends think this is strange.  A lot of things surrounding language are like this with me.  I love the “look” of certain words and often see text as being “art”.  Obviously, I have a love of beautiful typefaces and fonts - but sometimes I wish words were just words to me and not shapes with colors.

"gustatory"

-adjective   of or pertaining to taste or tasting.

That’s today’s word from “dictionary.com”.  I thought it was a good one as I’ve really been in to cooking new things this last week.
